Ian was raised in Eagle River, Alaska, USA, by an English mother and an American father. Having an early interest in education, he began peer-teaching and tutoring at the age of thirteen. At fifteen, he began his Bachelor's programme in Russian at the University of Alaska Anchorage. While doing so, he headed a student-taught elementary school Russian programme. After graduating, he began a seven-year, three-state career in the banking industry, while continuing to tutor Russian, Spanish, and English as a second language outside of his normal work. In 2010 he earned his TEFL certification, and in 2011 moved to Trento, Italy to take up teaching English full-time. In 2013 he relocated again, this time to Bratislava, Slovakia, and founded his own language services company there. Out of curiosity for the Azeri language and culture, he left Slovakia for Azerbaijan in late 2015. There he began his work with LSD and continues to enjoy teaching English full-time.
In his free time, Ian is a traveller, hyperpolyglot, and athlete. He has been to more than fifty countries of the world. Apart from his native English, he has a communicative proficiency in Italian, Slovak, Spanish, Russian, German, French, Slovene, and studies Azerbaijani as well as many additional languages. He trains his mind and body daily, and competes in Azerbaijan's highest league of the sport Ultimate, on the Baku Evil Eyes. He aims to see as many countries and speak as many tongues as possible in his lifetime, all the while spreading his passion for language to his students.
